Hi there Kay
The freedom of information request is this. Is there a minimum percentage of the population who have to vote in order that the Welsh Assembly Elections are Valid? If so could you let me know what that percentage of the population is.
Or would the Assembly members be able to claim a mandate from the population to Govern, if there was only a 5% turn out?????

Its pritty self explanitory and I wonder if that 5% would still make it a valid election or not. I have the sneaking feeling that it would. I wonder what the population would feel about that. Given that the majority of the electorate have said 'NONE OF YOU ARE WORTHY OF MY VOTE'
Today fri 18/5/07 I see that BBC Radio Wales on their phone in show, had Mike German telling everyone how is party had X ammount of the vote. Yeah well he didn't take into account that it was under half the Electorate that did vote, under HALF and we live in a DEMOCRACY. Seems like the Minority can rule over the Majority in this Election. Later on they had Mr. Ron Davies and the his dream of consensus politics in Wales. Well it seems to me the majority don't want any government, or am I the only one missing something here????
Infact I think its about time this power grabbers realised that they want someone who represents their views and not a political party. They want their say in the running of their country, not some toe the party line have got a brain cell that can work independently of itself.
SO ITS WAIT FOR THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION TO GET BACK TO ME. THEY HAVE HAD TWO DAYS SO FAR. PERHAPS THEY DON'T KNOW EH CRAZYDAVE! THAT WOULDN'T SUPRISE ME. WHEN THEY DO RESPOND YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT I WILL UPDATE IT HERE.

You queried whether there is a minimum percentage of the population who have to vote for the Welsh Assembly Elections to be valid.
The answer is simply; there is no minimum percentage required for the elections to be valid.
If you are dissatisfied with this response, the Commission operates a complaints procedure, and we will provide details on request.

I appreciate that there is little point in complaining that 1% of the population could turn out and therefore make it a valid election. But I do find it remarkable that in a democracy where the majority are supposed to be the victors, that 99% could turn their backs on the electoral process and those elected be allowed to rule.
